War Is Not An Option

By: Getachew Mequanent - A growing number of people are criticizing the current Ethiopian government policy on Eritrea and some among them appear to suggest that EPRDF take a military action. May I remind everyone that any advocacy of war with Eritrea is ill-advised, unnecessary and counter-productive. War causes the loss of lives, destruction of homes, displacement of men, women and children and damage to farmlands and the ecosystem. It creates another historical wound between Ethiopians and Eritreans. It creates an uncertain economic environment and discourages investment by foreign and domestic investors. Finally, should EPRDF declare war, bilateral and multilateral donors can stop the flow of aid resources to Ethiopia; this could mean, for example, cessation of currently operational projects: roads, dams, electricity expansion, schools, health centres, agricultural services, etc.

A Chapter in the History of the Italian Fascist Occupation of Ethiopia Italian colonialism, like virtually all modern European colonialism, was from its inception inherently at least partially racist. Italy’s “first-born” colony, Eritrea - Bairu Tafla's homeland, was thus characterised from the outset by considerable racial discrimination. Italian and “native” housing in Asmara, and other Eritrean towns, thus tended to be separate. The principle of different schools for Italians and “natives” in the colony was officially decreed as early as 1909, and urban segregation in Asmara in 1916. No less significant was the institution of “madamismo”, by which Italians officials, soldiers and others, took “native” wives/concubines/mistresses, who had virtually no rights at law.

Peasant Revolution in Ethiopia:    The Tigray People's Liberation Front, 1975-1991 (African Studies)
Almost unnoticed, in the wake of the overthrow of Emperor Haile-Selassie, the coming to power of the military, and the ongoing independence struggle in Eritrea, a band of students launched an insurrection from the northern Ethiopian province of Tigray. Calling themselves the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), they built close relations with Tigray's poverty-stricken peasants and on this basis liberated the province in 1989, and formed an ethnic-based coalition of opposition forces that assumed state power in 1991. This book chronicles that history and focuses in particular on the relationship of the revolutionaries with Ethiopia's peasants.
