Meles Zenawi Knows What Ethiopians Want
Stranded at the
Addis Ababa Airport for the second time in less than five
months gave me time to think about Prime Minister Meles
Zenawi of Ethiopia. Having been around Addis City for two
nights and driven across on sometimes very rough terrain and
seen massive constructions going on, I suddenly realised
that no matter how his unflattering human rights records may
be, the man has done well for Ethiopia.

have shown impressive results. Primary school enrollments
have tripled, child mortality has almost been cut in half,
and the number of people with access to clean water has more
than doubled. Over the last four years, GDP growth has
averaged over 11 percent per year. The percentage of
Ethiopians living in poverty, cut from 46 percent in 1996
and 44 percent in 2001, to 39 percent in 2006...

Ethiopia - The end of the student movement 1960-2008
The strongest protest came from
Aleqa Asres, who said “a youth who does not know about his

putting food in his stomach. These students will get drunk
quickly and will be bitter towards their own people. For
Ethiopia’s problem, they will seek foreign (alien) solutions
because they wouldn’t know that the solution is in their own
backyard. As a consequence, they themselves become the
problem.”

The Idea of Privatizing Land in Ethiopia: But Privatizing
For Whose Benefit?
by Tesfaye Habisso -land is different
from other resources in several important respects. One of
these is that it is fixed in supply. Population on the other
hand is increasing in leaps and bounds. To meet this
challenge, and given the country's very low industrial base
and limited opportunities for non-agricultural employment
pursuits, no sane government can leave the land issue to the
mercy of market forces and implement private ownership of
land instead of the prevailing public ownership. The former
pattern of ownership will undoubtedly lead to the
concentration of land in the hands of a few rich people and
to the eviction and landlessness of many thousands of poor
peasants in rural areas.
